March 11th:
International Day of Solidarity for Activists at the University of Puerto Rico
Activists in Puerto Rico and other regions of the world called for an International Day of Solidarity for the ongoing struggle against fees and the increasing privatisation of education at the University of Puerto Rico. For months students have been on strike and resisting the introduction of US$800 in fees and occupation of campuses by police forces. (e.g. Jan.27th: ism-global.net)
This international day of solidarity was convened to support the struggle of students of the UPR. It also sought to place the struggle at UPR in the global context of the fight for free emancipatory education. According to the initiators this day of solidarity is also part of the "Spring of Resistance".
