March 11th: International Day of Solidarity with Activists at UPR

Activists in Puerto Rico and other regions of the world called for an International Day of Solidarity for the ongoing struggle against fees and the increasing privatisation of education at the University of Puerto Rico. For months students have been on strike and resisting the introduction of US$800 in fees and occupation of campuses by police forces. (e.g. Jan.27th: ism-global.net)

This international day of solidarity was convened to support the struggle of students of the UPR. It also sought to place the struggle at UPR in the global context of the fight for free emancipatory education. According to the initiators this day of solidarity is also part of the "Spring of Resistance".

Activists of the Free Education Movement Marburg (Germany) gathered in the city centred armed with a banner, flyers and a camera to inform the public about the situation at the University of Puerto Rico and express their solidarity. => Press release and Flyer text: ism-global.net

About 20 activists gathered in Manchester (United Kingdom) to get informed and discuss the situation at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) as well as to express their solidarity. => redaccion-pr.net

In Chicago (U.S. of A.) hundreds of people came together for a rally at Division Street => redaccion-pr.net

About 50 people gathered at the University of Barcelona (Spain) for a rally, singing songs, shouting slogans and displaying banners. => redaccion-pr.net

Students in Buenos Aires (Argentina) recorded a video expressing their solidarity.

Activists at Northland College (Madison, U.S. of A.) also made a short video showing their support.

Alumnis at the University of California (Berkeley, U.S. of A.) released a statement including 13 demands directed at the government of Puerto Rico. => redaccion-pr.net

The president of the National Assembly of People's Power in Cuba (Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada) issued a statement of support.

The Executive Secretariat of the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) released a statement in solidarity as well.
